oh, and our senior exhibition on friday went swimmingly!! i was super nervous at first, but then after i talked i could actually enjoy the success. thank you everyone who came! we have a great turnout, maybe up to 100 people showed up! one for the north park art books for sure.
Well, back from L.A.!! It was a really great weekend. We got in thursday afternoon, and to my horror I got a migraine on the plane, and stupid me forgot my new migraine medicine. Luckily, Jonny gave me some enzymes, and after laying down for an hour I felt normal again. Him and Agu took Annie and I to get food and walk around, and we hiked up a canyon. We hiked up another canyon Friday at Santa Monica, and then we walked along the beach and pier and did some shopping.
Saturday we went to the tar pits and the LACMA (los angeles county museum of art). It was really great because it had a great post-modern collection, including some of the giant metal curls (read about it here: http://www.lacma.org/info/TransformingProgress.aspx) sculptures by Richard Serra. They were the 'piece de resistance' for Annie and I, and we took some (probably illegal) pictures in them. Later we went to Tim's gallery, and it was pretty interesting. There were some North Park alumni and posh LA artsy people around, though we could tell Jonny and Agu were getting bored so we left to watch the simpson's movie.
Sunday we almost went to church, went to Big Boy's instead for breakfast, and then (with Tim and his wife) me and Annie went to Tim Hawkinson's house for lunch. I wish I had known more about him before I went, because it turns out he's a major figure in the contemporary art world right now. Tim (our prof) says he's about as famous as you can get these days. He does some pretty phenominal sculpture, and in his studio we saw a "motorcycle" made out of wire and feathers he's making. His wife is also an artist (a painter), and a teacher at UCLA. Needless to say, I would love to have their life.
We concluded our trip with a red-eye flight back to chicago, getting in at 5am this morning... yuck...
our hummer limo right outside jonny + agu's place
hiking in the hollywood hills, who knew!
Jonny and I at the LACMA (you can see the hollywood sign in he distance)
last night was fun... we threw Annika, Annie, and Allison a birthday party, and we had a pretty good turn out. we even got some swedes into the mix, it's been a while since we've had that, strangely enough. well besides fnan, but i'm not sure he counts, haha. there was only a slight "bitches and hoes" situation but i'd have to say, all in all, it was a good night. we had the happy birthday sung in english, french, and swedish (thanks to claire and the swedes), so that was pretty cool. sadly i had to get up and go to work in the morning, but hey, sacrifices must be made sometimes.
friday night was fun too, we got to see torsten and chris's new place in logan square... it made us want to move over there. we saw anathallo play in wicker park, though i'll put the tern "saw" very loosely. it's impossible to see anything at that place (the subteranean) unless you're 6'6''... maybe if i ever go there again i'll bring gustav the swede and sit on his shoulders. haha...
hopefully i'll get some pictures up soon... i've been slackin' on that lately...
